SUMMARY:Webmovie: Paper Tigers
DESCRIPTION:This film is set within and around the campus of Lincoln Alternative High School in the rural community of Walla Walla\, Washington. Paper Tigers asks the following questions: What does it mean to be a trauma-informed school? And how do you educate teens whose childhood experiences have left them with a brain and body ill-suited to learn? \n\n\n\nIn search of clear and honest answers\, Paper Tigers hinges on a remarkable collaboration between subject and filmmaker. Armed with their own cameras and their own voices\, the teens of Paper Tigers offer raw but valuable insight into the hearts and minds of teens pushing back against the specter of a hard childhood.Against the harsh reality of truancy\, poor grades\, emotional pain\, and physical violence\, answers begin to emerge. The answers do not come easily. Nor can one simply deduce a one-size-fits-all solution to a trauma-informed education. But there is no denying something both subtle and powerful at work between teacher and student alike: the quiet persistence of love. \n\n\n\nContent Warning: This film discusses topics such as domestic violence\, drug use\, self-harm\, and suicidal ideation. Viewer discretion is advised. During the film\, we will have an additional Zoom breakout room open with staff member Mona Khaled available to provide support. If you want to stop viewing the film or speak to someone\, please message the host or co-hosts and they’ll help you join the breakout room. \n\n\n\nRegistration is now closed. Please check back for future Movie and Discussions\, thank you! \n\n\n\nDisability Network Southwest Michigan believes all people deserve full access and inclusion in our programs and services and will make every effort to secure necessary accommodations for participants in our events. Please register as soon as possible if you will require an accommodation to participate. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding this webinar\, please follow this link to email Miranda or call her at 269-345-1516 x120.

SUMMARY:Webmovie: Vision Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Vision Portraits is a deeply personal documentary by award-winning filmmaker Rodney Evans (Brother to Brother) as he explores how his loss of vision may impact his creative future\, and what it means to be a blind or visually impaired creative artist. It’s a celebration of the possibilities of art created by a Manhattan photographer (John Dugdale)\, a Bronx-based dancer (Kayla Hamilton)\, a Canadian writer (Ryan Knighton) and the filmmaker himself\, who each experience varying degrees of vision loss. Using archival material alongside new illuminating interviews and observational footage of the artists at work\, Evans has created a tantalizing meditation on blindness and creativity\, a sensual work that opens our minds to new possibilities. \n\n\n\nThis event is offered at the following time: \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 16\, 2024 at 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM — (Click here to register)\n\n\n\n\nDisability Network Southwest Michigan believes all people deserve full access and inclusion in our programs and services and will make every effort to secure necessary accommodations for participants in our events.
