Pearlene uses a power wheelchair and has to travel in the community three times a week for dialysis. She had been living on her own, but when her medical needs progressed to the point that she needed in-home family support she needed to find an affordable home that was large enough for her daughter and her family and also had a first-floor bedroom for herself. They were fortunate to locate a house that accommodated those needs; however there were several steps leading to the entry. Pearlene contacted Disability Network Southwest Michigan and through our Ramp Up program we were able to provide her with a ramp.
Pearlene can now be independent in using Metro County Connect to get to and from dialysis and access her community. Pearlene said, “I can be independent and that’s how I like it!”
